Detail, detail, detail! So for some it is all about location, location, location and whilst this is hugely important, we know that often it is the sum of many little things that make all the difference to the camping experience.
Attention to detail, everything we do and have done has been tested to ensure it works not just looks good on paper. And whilst we own strand camping we also go camping, we head away in our camper over the winter, so we know what makes a difference to us when we stay on a campsite and quite often it is the little extra attention to detail, the finishing touches, that makes the difference between a nice campsite and a great campsite.
Over the last few years we have improved and updated the campsite based on feedback from campers and our experiences over the winters.
If I am planning to stay on a campsite invariably I will have done some research first, maybe I have selected the site based on personal recommendations or based on others campers reviews on the various review sites, this way I can get an idea if this is the type of campsite I want to stay on. And when I actually arrive at a campsite where I intend to stay I will ask for a look around if I am not sure as to whether the site meets my needs, usually one look in the toilet/shower block will give me a very good idea how well a premises is managed and run, dirty facilities or facilities that do not work as they should will be a good indicator that the rest of the site is not particularly good.
Cleanliness is really important to me so we don’t have a tick box on the entrance stating when the toilets and showers were checked on the hour instead we just regularly check them, we believe in a little and often approach to cleaning, it is so much easier to keep things clean if they have not been allowed to get too dirty. We provide the bathroom basics including toilet roll, hand soap and hand dryers (that actually dry your hands!). Our hot showers are included in the price of your stay, so no tokens or coins are required and no pushing the button every 30 seconds to keep the water flowing. Instead just switch it on and spend as long as you like. I am not a fan of the walk from the sink area, followed by a walk to the toilet cubicle and then another walk to the shower cubicle whilst carrying my wash kit, change of clothes and a towel, so instead all of our showers are en-suites, a private enclosed space with a toilet, sink and shower, with a place sit and get dry and with plenty of hooks.
We know the owners of tents, campervans and caravans get a little bit nervous when the see children enjoying themselves playing ball games near their sleeping unit, so we have provided a safe enclosed ball game area where the children can play and the adults can relax knowing they are in safe area. We have a box of toys that the children can share either on the campsite or on the beach. It’s another small thing which can make a difference. Equally important is a separate dedicated area for all four legged friends! And we have provided a small area for walking your pet which is also equipped with agility equipment for added fun and adventure.
We know how important first impressions are so we aim for the campsite to be clean, tidy and well presented. We meet our guests personally on arrival and we let them know about the village, the area and local attractions. We provide maps and in some cases share some of the places we have been to. For example most of our visitors have been, or will be, visiting the famous Cliffs of Moher which has an excellent reputation and fantastic walks and views. Additionally the drive from the campsite towards Loop Head is stunning, with fantastic views of the Shannon and Atlantic coastlines. If you follow the coast road from Kilkee you’ll see the amazing Kilkee cliffs and outlying islands. The Loop head drive with a stop to see the Loophead light House and the Bridges of Ross are a family day out, all on the Wild Atlantic Way. Another must is dolphin watching and there are plenty of ways to see them. When you return from a day on the sand and in the surf we have an outdoor shower specifically for rinsing sandy feet and wetsuits, or even washing the dog!
We have lots of walkers/back packers and cyclists who stay on the campsite, after walking or cycling all day they appreciate a covered seating area, or the ability to move some of the extra tables and chairs on the campsite to their pitch. For our guests who are camping in tents we have the all-important ‘Campers’ Corner’, in this area there is a free phone charging unit for android and apple phones, a fridge/freezer and kettle for everyone’s use. Plus a hot drinks machine, €1 for a tea, coffee, hot chocolate or hot soup o for making hot drinks. Our free Wi-Fi is fibre optic and really quite fast in this area.
We know people forget things so we have ‘essential spares’. A spare mallet, spare electrical leads that provide power in tents and an electric airbed pump.
Our laundry is equipped with two 10KG washings machines and two 10KG dryers all work using multiples of €1 euro coins, plus free hot water hand washing sink, an iron and an ironing board. Our washing lines are big enough to dry tents, wetsuits and bedding. For people who don’t want to wait for the washing to wash or dry, we are happy to provide a service wash subject to time and availability for a small extra cost.
We know that little things all add up and we hope you’ll agree when you come to see us at Strand Camping Doonbeg.
